For those of us who were indie-pop lovin’ teens/early twenty-somethings between the late 90s and mid 00s, Popstarz at the Scala was, to use a phrase coined by 80s pop duo Mel and Kim, for ‘showing out’! Strutting out on the town, filling up on cheap booze at the uni bar – or worse, Wetherspoons – then mincing over to old Ku to get royally bladdered before catching the bus to King’s Cross. By 1am we were at Scala, moshing away in the room of sweat with raggedy hair, flared jeans and wallet on a chain flying around with alternative gay abandon. Now, after an absence of almost six years, Popstarz returns to Scala for a Good Friday session this Easter weekend.

Of course, Popstarz has lived on at numerous other venues since, and held court at the now demolished Paradise Club in Islington when it was born in 1995, followed by the Hanover Grand in Regent Street for many years, before giving the hookers of King’s Cross a run for their money. But it’s the Scala era that holds the fondest memories to a certain generation of party monsters. Think of it like the various incarnations of the Sugababes; yes, the others had their wonderful moments, but it’s really the Keisha, Mutya and Heidi version we all loved the most.

Popstarz LogoThose early-noughties student revellers may now be late 20s/early 30 somethings, many of whom now work at So So Gay HQ, but knowing us gayers, we’re not going to let a little thing like being 10 years older stop us from partying like rabid teenagers! Of course, this new Popstarz isn’t just for us veteran ravers, there has since developed a whole new generation of Popstarz faithful who will be sashaying up from its most recent home of Hidden in Vauxhall to continue their joyous tradition of truly alternative, no-attitude, guaranteed-to-cop-off extravaganza of carefree drunkeness.
