Video Review: The Irrepressibles – Arrow

Jamie McDermott and his orchestra are back after their sensational debut album. Their new album, NUDE, is due for release in October, and we’ve got a preview by means of a video for their first single, ‘Arrow’.

Unashamedly homoerotic, the video seems to almost take notes from titillating fan video PAG – The Lady is Dead, but leaves out the abundant surrealism. The entire video is various shots of two naked male models wrestling and sparring. Choreographed and directed by McDermott himself, it’s a strange and erotically artistic visual feast which only adds to the ethereal beauty of his music.

Yet again, the only criticism is that it’s easy to get so swept up in the grandiose of the music itself and ignore the deeply poetic lyrics, which here are dark, brooding, and bitter. Watching the rather handsome models battle it out is but a further distraction. But if ‘Arrow’ is anything to go by, it may seem that the general feel of their new approach will be a little less rich than the triumph that was Mirror Mirror, with a lighter scoring and a cleaner sound. What’s most interesting about the music here is the introduction of an overt electronic element, something that was incredibly low key in the band’s previous efforts, so it will be interesting to see what the end product of the album will be like.

The video for ‘Arrow’ certainly whets our appetite for NUDE, and hopefully some more blissfully seductive music and videos to match.

‘Arrow’ is available to download from iTunes.
