What happens when you let Marilyn Manson loose with a camera, a tonne of neon paint, black lights, gas masks and a machine gun? We think we just found out, as ‘Slo-Mo-Tion’, Manson’s second video from his new album Born Villain, hits our YouTube accounts.
Starting in a manner reminiscent of Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid, this video hits home like a bad drug trip. Colour, music, costume, light and smoke all blended into a truly gothic-feeling video, with none of the metal usually left behind in Manson’s wake. Although there is glitter. We like glitter.
This video, age restricted on account of the nakedness featured throughout, alludes to sexuality and androgyny by placing heavy focus on breasts, whether it is a woman walking down the street naked or a man wearing fake ones at a party. For the most part, the music of ‘Slo-Mo-Tion’ is secondary to the action – you aren’t asked to watch this video for the virtue of the track: you’re told listen to the music because of the video.
Producing a bi-polar reaction in people is what Manson does best – and something he gets the chance to do here as the Director of this new work from his house of Goth. On the one hand, this video takes a traditionally gothic feel and spins it – there is abundant amounts of pink, glitter (did we mention the glitter?), funky colour and costumes, alongside the customary creepiness, however. He will probably get slammed for highlighting gun-play at the end, on account of the madman at the Dark Knight Rises premier, and this is genuinely disturbing.
We may have to get the address of where he got that boa though…
