Do you remember t.A.T.u… The Russian ‘lesbian’ duo that sang the classic ‘All the Things She Said’ in the pouring rain, and who also came third in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest? Well, the short, dark-haired one has now grown her hair, developed some curves and has gone solo. On 21 August 2012 Julia Volkova will release her début worldwide single, ‘Didn’t Wanna Do It’ and here at So So Gay we were intrigued to hear the final product.
Yet, we needn’t have got quite so excited about it because it simply does not hit the spot. The singer moves purposely away from the signature euro-pop sound of t.A.T.u and sticks a heavy, and slightly trashy, dance edge on to it.
Volkova does not hold back either. The song essentially is about Volkova hooking up with a date’s female best friend. With lyrics like, ‘One thing lead to another / We looked at each other / Then she started kissing and feeling me up’ and with the song’s title, it almost implies that she had no choice. With all that said, lyrically this song is not going to blow anyone away.
The beats come heavy and the auto-tune comes thick and fast. The song is set up to be a summer smash, ‘Didn’t Wanna Do It’ does feature a pleasant, catchy and ever so slightly toe-tapping chorus, yet, sadly, it doesn’t have a lot else going for it. The introductory synths are quite weak and irritating whilst the bridge is extremely grating.
The song is accompanied but quite a laughable video, which sees Volkova acting as a (s)expert. A slightly geeked out blonde girl is having man problems and calls Volkova for help, which essentially is turning her into a bit of a hoe and have an outdoor orgy!
To conclude, we doubt very much the Russian singer will have an international hit with ‘Didn’t Wanna Do It’. The ideas are there, and it is possibly something you could imagine hearing in a cheap Spanish club, but unfortunately the product is nothing more than irritating and slightly cringe-worthy; the saving grace is the catchy (at best) chorus.
‘Didn’t Wanna Do It’ is out 21 August 2012 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon now.
WARNING: The video is rather racy in parts, so you may want to refrain from watching this at your desk at work!
