Track Review: Girls Aloud – Something New

The eagerly anticipated Tenth Anniversary single from Girls Aloud hit their website and YouTube page today, and it’s called ‘Something New. Musically, it really isn’t – but then that’s why we love them.

Having waited for this for with the greatest of anticipation, we expected something extraordinary, and we weren’t disappointed. Having snatched a theme from Beyoncé’s ‘Who Run The World’ and a chord line that sounds remarkably like something Calvin Harris produces, you could be thinking that they had lost their entire identity. This actually sounds a bit like the version of ‘Walk This Way’ they did with the then version of the Sugababes, except with a kind of euphoric electro sound that hasn’t been since heard since ‘Something Kinda Ooh’.

The solo careers of Nicole and Cheryl have left no impact on the group’s musical stylings, however, and we are a little bit amazed that Cheryl, in particular, didn’t vie for a better vocal line considering she’s the only member to have had significant solo success since the group went on hiatus in April 2009.

It is great to know that the girls are still aloud and kicking (see what we did there?) but this isn’t as new as the title would suggest – this is a new spin, granted, but the style has not changed significantly. This is one of the few times where that comment is not meant as a criticism. As we still clutch the discarded megamix to our bosom, this track reminds us of the times when we could dance around our living room to the music that made them surpass their opposites in Popstars: The Rivals after the show had ended.

So we know that in two and a bit days we are going to get ‘Something New’, but is there going to be an album, a tour, or is this just to test the waters? We anticipate eagerly.
