Lee Williscroft-Ferris reports on Stonewall’s latest campaign, aimed at encouraging the government to ‘get on with’ marriage equality.
Stonewall, the UK’s most prominent LGBT charity, has stepped up its pro-marriage equality campaign, urging the government to ‘get on with’ extending full civil marriage to gay couples.
In a bold move, the organisation has released a series of postcards and social media images featuring the slogan ‘Some People Are Gay. Get On With It!’, an adaptation of the now-famous and highly visible ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ mantra of recent years.
Stonewall is encouraging the UK government to expedite plans to introduce marriage equality, including giving religious denominations the right to hold same-sex marriage ceremonies should they wish to do so. Despite ministers having pledged to make marriage equality a reality by 2015, the issue was conspicuous by its absence in the recent Queen’s Speech.
Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of Stonewall said: ‘The Deputy Prime Minister, a great supporter of equality, recently talked of “argy-bargy” around equal marriage. We can help him cut through it – our very straightforward Draft Marriage Bill was published months ago. Much of the work is done – it really is time for the government to get on with it.’
