Less than a year from her latest album The Sea (which we reviewed here) and just a few months after working with Jodie Harsh on the the dance EP The Night, Melanie C comes back with a brand new project, driven by her remarkable love for theatre and introduced from the track ’I Don’t Know How To Love Him’.
This ballad, originally featured in the rock musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ has been recorded and performed by a wide range of acts throughout the history: Sinead O’Connor, Bonnie Tyler, Cilla Black and even Tesco Mary have chosen to pay homage to the ‘maestro’ Andrew Lloyd Webber in the past.
Melanie C, always the gambler, thrives on this particular challenge and supported by an excellent arrangement, manages to make the track very personal, offering a heartfelt, convincing interpretation.
In the wider context, this record is only a part of Sporty’s new project: after a successful run as TV judge on the ITV talent show ‘Superstar’, Melanie will be playing Mary Magdalene during the upcoming UK and Ireland arena tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar” this Autumn, alongside Tim Minchin, Chris Moyles and ‘Superstar’ winner Ben Forster.
It’s not common for a world-acclaimed female singer to throw away the popstar’s rule book and follow her passions: for this reason, we applaude Melanie’s choice and will be awaiting the forthcoming Stages, a collection of her favourite songs from the theatre, with anticipation. (Well, partly also because of an announced duet with friend and former Spice Girl Emma Bunton. Because two Spices are better than one!)
‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’ is now available on iTunes, 7Digital, Amazon, Fairsharemusic and HMV Digital
