Before last year’s winners, Little Mix, truly broke the long-standing assumption that a group couldn’t win The X Factor, there were the runners-up of the 2008 series, JLS, acting as standard bearer for the group category. Now on to their fourth studio album, JLS are truly one of the success stories from the show.
Their latest album, Evolution, is due for release on 5 November. Following on from their Sport Relief charity single, ‘Proud’, released back in March, comes ‘Hottest Girl in the World’. While the title may be suggestive of a rather flimsy second single, the production is rather magnificent. As many have already identified, the sound of this latest track is very reminiscent of a certain Justin Timberlake. The single will be released on 21 October, and heralds a shift in gear for the four lads.
While One Direction are wholly embracing the pop scene, JLS are smartly veering towards the urban, R&B sound. On their new album, they have worked with some of the best American producers: The Runners (Rihanna, Chris Brown, Rick Ross), Midi Mafia (Brandy, Frank Ocean) and even legendary R&B hit-maker, Rodney Jerkins (TLC, Kanye West, Beyoncé). Their latest single may be fundamentally an urban reworking of One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
