EUROvisual: Loreen wins Melodifestivalen!

The final of Melodifestivalen, Sweden’s national contest to select a representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, was held last night in Stockholm. Always one of the most hotly anticipated national finals, Melodifestivalen is a veritable Euro-phenomenon.

As predicted in yesterday’s EUROvisual, out of the ten competing acts, it boiled down to a straight fight between two entries; ‘Euphoria’ by Loreen and ‘Amazing’ by the aesthetically pleasing Danny Saucedo.

In the end, Loreen convinced both the international juries and the televoters and was chosen to fly the Swedish flag in Azerbaijan by a margin of 70 points.

An instant favourite among a huge number of Eurovision fans, ‘Euphoria’, as the name suggests, is a contemporary-sounding, hi-energy dance track, delivered with confidence by Loreen, an alumna of Sweden’s Idol 2004. The 28-year-old is a diminutive Bjork-esque performer with moves reminiscent of ‘Wuthering Heights’-era Kate Bush. What more could you possibly need?

With many entries yet to be revealed, including the UK’s choice of song for Engelbert Humperdinck, it would be unwise for EUROvisual to make any predictions as to who might emerge victorious in Baku in May. However, we are convinced that ‘Euphoria’ is a real contender.
