Let’s be honest when it comes to the most recognisable models in the world the women have pretty much got it covered. Hardly a day goes by where we will not be confronted with the faces of Kate, Naomi, Aggy or Giselle. We didn’t even need to use their surnames yet you knew who we were talking about. They stare down at us from billboards, out at us from store windows and up at us from the pages of magazines such as Vogue, Elle and Grazia. It seems that every week there is a new female ‘model of the moment’ being adored by the fashion houses. This week it appears to be new Chanel girl Anne V. So what of the boys? The likelihood is you’ll recognise some of the faces below but know little about the guys featuring in the advertisments. With his dark brooding looks and curly hair Sean O’pry looks fresh of the boat from Sicily not his native state of Georgia, U.S.A. Just look at our featured image as an example. Scouted when a booker viewed his high school prom photos on social network Myspace Sean has gone on to great success as a model. Fronting campaigns for Armani, Versace, Viktor & Rolf and Zara to name just a few, the gorgeous yank certainly has an impressive career under his belt. Probably why he is listed as the most successful male model of the season on website models.com. One thing to look foward to is – at only twenty-three the boy should have a few more years left in him yet.
At the age of Sixteen Clement Chabernaud made his debut on the Paris runways for none other than Dior Homme. Fast forward seven years and Monsieur Chabernaud is now one of the most recognizable faces in the business. A favourite of Muicca Prada for several seasons at the end of the last decade Clement is now the face of Swedish fashion house Filippa K. An alternative to the muscular Adonis types that fill the runways of the Italian houses we at So So Gay would like nothing more than to run of to deepest Provence and set up a chateau with this French fox.
Currently the face of Armani fragrance ‘Acqua di Gio’ it’s difficult to go anywhere without spotting the angelic gaze of Simon Nessman. The Canadian model, 22, has held many campaigns over the last few seasons. As well as advertisements for D&G, Ralph Lauren and John Galliano you may recognise him from Madonna’s ‘Girl gone wild’ video where he can be seen seductively smoking, licking himself and rolling around on the floor with a bunch of other topless models. We think YouTube is about to crash.
Pretty much a new face on the model scene Zhao Lei has made an impressive start. Prada, Hugo Boss and Diesel have all featured the Chinese model in campaigns or on the runway. With the rise of the Asian markets in terms of luxury we are likely to see more and more Chinese models featuring on the pages of Vogue and GQ in the near future. Andrej Pejic’s story could be a movie script. Fleeing the Bosnian war in the early nineties his family settled in Melbourne, Australia. Then after being scouted – many different stories exist – he walked for Jean Paul Gaultier in both the men’s and women’s shows for Winter 2011. With his androgynous looks Andrej closed the women’s collection dressed as a Gaultier bride. Many in the industry have said that with people perception of beauty changing and minds being liberated Andrej’s unique look may well be a glimpse of the future.
Czech out this beauty! Get it? Tomas Skoloudik born in Prague in 1985 is the face of both Armani underwear and Armani Exchange this coming season. Featuring in campaigns for Guess, Kenneth Cole and Gas Jeans in the past has given the Eastern European hottie a wealth of experience. Not just a fashion model Tomas has also featured on the ever elusive Men’s Health cover. We’re guessing he likes to be shirtless a lot. When interviewed about his best feature the former Gap ambassador stated “My girlfriend said I have nice ass, but I guess it’s my face, my lips and also my body I hope.” We couldn’t agree more.
Jay Camilerri: Model, Tweeter and Soho party boy. These are just a few of the things that make Jay captivating. Featuring in E4 documentary ‘Dirty Sexy Things’ Jay was thrust into the limelight and gained a legion of loyal followers. Causing controversy with his wild antics, snogging the faces of girls and boys and generally having a good time like any twenty something lad would Jay has certainly captured the attention of the industry. Magazines such as Rollercoaster, Client and GQ have featured the Essex boy on their pages and Puma and Kurt Gieger in their advertising campaigns. At 22 and with that edgy, Shoreditch look Camilleri is definitely one to watch in the future
Bursting into public consciousness with that D&G fragrance ad David Gandy has been catapulted into fashion arena. After capturing our hearts lounging in very tight white swimwear on a boat in a tranquil Thai cove, Dolce and Gabbana went on to publish an entire book dedicated to David and his perfectly sculptured male physique. Campaigns followed with American staple Banana Republic before Mr. Gandy was snapped up by the British Fashion Council as an ambassador for the newly launched London Collections: Men. David can now be found hanging around Somerset House during London Fashion Week dressed in the best of British menswear including Burberry and Tom Ford. Up and comer Aaron Frew is best known for featuring in a campaign for CK One Shock by Calvin Klein alongside Mrs. David Walliams, Lara Stone. At only 5’7 Aaron is shorter than your average model but that hasn’t stopped him starting his career with a bang. He is constantly featuring in editorial work for avant-garde publications such as EY! Magazine, Vision and Carbon Copy and even made an appearance in Attitude magazine’s annual ‘Naked Issue’. All this has happened before Frew has even turned twenty-one.
It’s often difficult to place where you know Adam Senn from. Was he in that show? That controversial magazine advert? That movie? The answer is likely to be yes to all. Currently featuring in Dolce and Gabanna’s ‘The One-Sport’ he has been a familiar face on the scene since starring in the 2003 Gucci campaign where he can be seen pulling down a woman’s underwear to reveal the iconic ‘G’ shaved into her pubic hair. He also featured in MTV semi-reality show ‘The City’ following the life of Whitney Port as she tries to build a fashion career in New York. Now moving into the restaurant business Adam owns an Italian eatery named ‘Il Bastardo’ in New York City.
If you prefer your models a little bit rough around the edges then look no further than Josh Beech. Celebrating 5 years since he was scouted and immediately snapped up by Burberry this Brit rocker focuses more on music these days. This however, has not stopped the likes of Vivienne Westwood, All Saints, Topman and Thierry Mugler featuring Josh in season after season of editorial pieces and campaigns. Never one to keep his legion of fans waiting for his next move the Kentish cutie even has his own Tumblr blog ‘Josh Beech Daily. A reason to wake up every morning if ever we heard one.
