Icelandic PM enters gay marriage

Johanna Sigurdardottir

Johanna Sigurdardottir and Jonina Leosdottir became one of the first gay couples in Iceland to officially marry on the day the legislation equalising marriage law came into force – Sunday 27th June 2010.

What makes this marriage especially notable is that Johanna Sigurdardottir is the current serving Prime Minister of Iceland. Miss Sigurdardottir and her partner Miss Leosdottir joined in a civil partnership in 2002.

On 12th June 2010 – in an unanimous vote – the Iceland parliament pushed through legislation allowing gay marriage on equal terms building on their long standing record of equal rights. Iceland became one of the first nations to allow civil partnerships way back in 1996.
